AMD’s high-end laptop graphics cards with RDNA 3 can actually be pretty fast, according to the latest rumors – and Nvidia’s Lovelace mobile GPUs have also been spotted in a new leak and are supposed to be just as fast.
All of this comes from a couple of Twitter users: first Greymon55 made a simple tweet (identified by Wccftech (opens in new tab)) which consists of a laptop icon saying that it is approximately the same as the RX 6950 XT, meaning that the top RX 7000 notebook GPU will have similar performance levels as this robust desktop graphics card from AMD.
Kopite7kimi then took to another thread on Twitter – a post revealing Nvidia’s alleged next-gen laptop GPU lineup (we’ll come back to that) – saying the RX 7900M, which is evidently what the leaker believes the RDNA mobile GPU will be. 3 top dog (based on the Navi 32 chip, apparently) offers performance in the area of the RTX 3090 desktop board.
😮💨Battle with RX 7900M, performs like RTX 3090.October 22, 2022
Apply your own spice freely here, of course, but in other words, these leakers are saying the same thing, as the RX 6950 XT is on the same performance bar as the RTX 3090. (In many games, at least – they swap scams here and there, but the big picture is one of them very similar in general, at least with rasterization, which means not considering ray-traced graphics).
Review: Really impressive stuff – and the same goes for Nvidia’s next-gen?
If that’s true – and that’s a giant What if, because this is a big old claim – the flagship RDNA 3 laptop could be something really special. Offering RTX 3090 / RX 6950 XT performance in a gaming notebook early next year would be a huge leap forward for gamers on the go; in fact, we cannot underestimate how much of a step in that momentum would be. Keep in mind that AMD’s current mobile flagship has the performance levels of an RX 6700 XT, to put things in perspective.
The other interesting element here is the Nvidia leak – again, keep your skeptical hat tight – showing that Team Green reportedly has an RTX 4090 laptop GPU coming. This is notable as we haven’t seen a mobile RTX 3090 (only a 3080 Ti), but this flagship GPU won’t use the desktop version’s AD102 graphics chip – that would be too hot to handle – it will hit even an AD103. But this will still offer a big performance boost over the existing 3080 Ti laptop graphics card, of course.
Trying to guess where the performance might go compared to the rumored RX 7900M is obviously a big question at this stage, but it’s certainly feasible that an RTX 4090 mobile GPU (based on the AD103, as noted) could reach RTX 3090 performance levels or close. of this. Which is to say, the battle of the high-end laptops from AMD and Nvidia is likely to be a very close thing, and whichever way you get it right, gamers will get excellent levels of performance from these respective Green Team and Red Team GPUs.
Keep your fingers crossed that these two lines of speculation come to fruition – but at this point, they certainly represent promising signs for the near future of gaming laptops.
