Ola Electric, beset by a multitude of problems (involving both its products and its people), could have good news. And it’s finally here: the company has unveiled its in-house developed lithium-ion cell, NMC 2170. Ola said it will begin mass production of the cell at its next gigafactory near its FutureFactory by 2023.
The company’s CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, took to Twitter and said, “Our first natively manufactured lithium-ion cell! The cell is the heart of the electric vehicle revolution. We need to build our own technology to expand and innovate quickly. our cellular technology roadmap on its way!”
Ola was recently awarded a capacity of 20 GWh under the PLI Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) scheme by the government for advanced cell development in India. The company is setting up a cell manufacturing facility with an initial capacity of up to 20 GWh, localizing the important part of the EV value chain.

Ola said the latest generation High Nickel Cylindrical Cell uses NMC (Nickel, Manganese and Cobalt) on the cathode side and graphite and silicon on the anode side. The use of specific chemistry and materials allows the cell to accumulate more energy in a given space and also improves the cell’s overall life cycle. The cell was developed with indigenous conditions in mind, Ola added.
Lithium-ion cell batteries are widely used in the electric vehicle industry. Its smaller versions are already used in cell phones and laptops. Li-ion batteries have better power-to-weight ratio, mileage per charge is high. It has a low level of self-discharge, making maintenance easier. In addition, most lithium-ion battery components can be recycled.
Ola, which makes the S1 and S1 Pro Pro electric scooters, has also invested in an Israeli technology company StoreDot, which specializes in batteries with extremely fast charging (XFC) technology.
Thanks to the investment in StoreDot, Ola Electric will have access to state-of-the-art XFC battery technology that charges a battery from 0 to 100% in just 5 minutes. Ola will manufacture batteries integrating StoreDot’s fast charging technology in India.
